Referee
RefereeThe judge and timekeeper of the game. SOCCER: The chief official; he makes all final decisions, acts as timekeeper, calls all fouls and starts and stops play. BASKETBALL: One of two or three officials in charge of a game; they are responsible for calling all violations and fouls, levying penalties, and signaling valid field goals. See also center official; lead official; trail official; umpire. FENCING: The director. FIGURE SKATING: The official who has over-all charge of competition and serves as chairperson of the judges' panel. SPEED SKATING: The chief official, who oversees the entire race or meet, conducts the draw, and decides when the ice should be resurfaced. WATER POLO: In major matches, there are two referees, one on each side of the pool. Referees together are responsible for calling fouls and declaring penalties.
